We believe the highest levels of patient comfort can be achieved with simple American-made products of maximum quality. Our “Simple is Always Better” concept continues to be brought to life by designing, manufacturing, and distributing superior post-operative patient care products.

Our vision began in 2004 when we set out to provide a solution to the common problem, “why does cold therapy have to be such a hassle for patients and clinicians?” The answer we created combines the clinical effectiveness of electric cooling machines with the simplicity of a gel wrap. The result was the first and only product that provides exceptional patient care, increased staff efficiency, and unmatched clinical results. Our products are now being used by over 475 programs as we continue to grow our “Simple is Always Better” concept.

Mission Statement

To provide the highest levels of patient care with our American-made products that combine clinical efficacy with simplicity while supporting the comfort of our customers, community, and employees.

Our History

SMI was founded in 2004 by two gentlemen that had passion for manufacturing & post-operative healthcare product sales. Once the need for a simple solution to post-op pain control was identified, production began in a founder’s basement north of Pittsburgh, PA.

In 2006, SMI moved into their first dedicated manufacturing facility in Butler, PA. Continued growth allowed us to build a corporate headquarters and manufacturing facility in Rocky Mount, VA in 2011. Our geographical proximity along with direct distribution allows our products to be at our customer facilities without ever having a backorder, in as little as two days. Proud to say our products are Made in the USA, we take pride in creating jobs for so many individuals in the textile and packaging fields.

In 2021, SMI moved into a 25,000 square foot building expansion that will allow us to continue to serve our customers, grow our manufacturing capabilities, and provide more career opportunities within our community.

Rick Sell

Rick Sell

Chief Executive Officer & Member of Board of Directors

Rick Sell joined SMI in 2009 as COO and has led management, operations, and sales teams that have grown 10-fold since that time. In 2020, Rick was promoted to CEO of SMI.  Previously, Rick has spent 30 years in senior debt structuring and placements specializing in M&A and LBO transactions as Senior Vice President of Originations for GE Capital and Vice President of Marketing at PPM Finance, Inc. He has also worked for BofA and CIT. Rick graduated from York College of Pennsylvania in 1979 with a BS degree in Accounting.

Jeremy Adkins

Chief Financial Officer & Chief Operating Officer

Jeremy Adkins joined SMI in 2013 as Director of Finance responsible for all company accounting functions.  In 2016, Jeremy was promoted to President of SMI adding additional oversight of sales and production to his role.  In 2020, Jeremy was promoted to CFO/COO.  Prior to joining SMI, Jeremy spent 8 years working for BMS Consulting, Inc. gaining experience in accounting, taxation, and employee benefit programs.  Jeremy graduated from Ferrum College in 2001 with a BS degree in Accounting.

David Hambro

Vice President & National Sales Manager

David Hambro joined SMI in 2009 as the company’s first employed sales rep to begin to expand SMI’s business outside of the mid-Atlantic states. In 2015, David accepted the role of National Sales Manager and in November 2020 assumed the role of Vice President. Prior to joining SMI, David spent 5 years working in a sales role in the technical staffing industry. David graduated from Penn State University in 2003 with a BS degree in Business with an emphasis in Marketing & Management. .
